ELIZABETH BRESTAN-KNIGHT, PH.D.
PCIT GLOBAL TRAINER

Elizabeth Brestan-Knight, PhD., is the Alma Holladay Endowed Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Auburn University, where she has been a faculty member for the past 23 years. She has held two professorships, won several awards for her teaching, and served as the department co-chair and undergraduate program director. Dr. Brestan-Knight has authored numerous chapters and articles as well as a book published by Wiley-Blackwell, A Guide to Teaching Developmental Psychology. She is the director of the Parent-Child Research Lab at Auburn where her clinical research team provides PCIT and evaluates PCIT training workshops and PCIT treatment fidelity. Recent projects have also included the development of an artificial intelligence program for use in therapy and program evaluation for established PCIT clinics.
Brestan-Knight held a minority fellowship during her graduate training at the University of Florida, where Dr. Sheila Eyberg (the founder of PCIT) was her research mentor. As a result of her multi-cultural background, Brestan-Knight has included an emphasis on DEI issues throughout her career. She has recruited and mentored a number of BIPOC undergraduate and graduate students over the past two decades, conducted research on topics related to underserved families, founded the diversity committee in her department, and taught graduate diversity for the Department of Psychological Sciences for a number of years.
Brestan-Knight has conducted training focusing on the dissemination and implementation of PCIT to front-line mental health therapists across the US (Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Washington DC, Wisconsin) and internationally (Japan, Lebanon, Norway, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea). She also has a special interest in continuing education and has produced PCIT International’s library of CE videos since 2015.
MINDY YARD, LCPC
PCIT WITHIN-AGENCY TRAINER

Mindy Yard, LCPC, is a licensed counselor (LCPC) through the State of Maryland. Mindy has worked at the Carroll County Youth Service Bureau in Westminster, MD since obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2004 from McDaniel College (formally Western Maryland College). Mindy received her master’s degree in Counseling Education through McDaniel College in 2005.
Mindy has worked for the last 15 years to provide counseling services to the Early Childhood population in Carroll County, MD. Mindy is the Program Director for Early Childhood Services at CCYSB and oversees all the programs related to social/emotional development in the early childhood population including Mental Health Consultation, Psychological Testing Services, Family Navigation, Child Parent Psychotherapy and PCIT.
Mindy received her initial training in PCIT in 2010 and was trained by Global Trainer Elizabeth Brestan-Knight, PhD. from Auburn University. Mindy continued PCIT training and was certified as a PCIT Within-Agency Trainer in 2012. The PCIT clinic at CCYSB works in coordination with the Carroll County Department of Social Services to bring treatment to children 2-7 in Carroll County. The PCIT clinic serves over 30 children and their families yearly and has five PCIT therapist delivering services. The CCYSB PCIT program received the 2014 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for innovative programming and community collaboration.
KATIE SMERAGLIA, PH.D.
PCIT WITHIN-AGENCY TRAINER

Katie Smeraglia, Ph.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of Indiana and PCIT International Certified Within-Agency Trainer. Dr. Smeraglia has been involved in the research and implementation of PCIT since her time at Auburn University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in 2012. Dr. Smeraglia received her Master’s degree and Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 2019. Prior to completing her doctoral degree, Dr. Smeraglia completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Jefferson County Internship Consortium in Louisville,KY.
Dr. Smeraglia became certified in PCIT in 2020 and began her Within-Agency training with Dr. Brestan-Knight at this time. Dr. Smeraglia was certified as a Within-Agency Level 1 trainer in 2021. Currently, Dr. Smeraglia works in private practice, where she runs the Auxilium Psychological Services (APS) PCIT clinic. The APS PCIT Clinic serves over 15 PCIT families a week, and has four PCIT Therapists delivering services. Dr. Smeraglia actively treats PCIT families, and provides training, supervision, and PCIT certification to doctoral-level students and clinicians. She is passionate about implementing PCIT within a private practice setting.
